  • things to know when visiting a maybe-fae

    1. the house does not look like it belongs. it is small and cramped between newer buildings that do not wish it to be there. they are pushing against it but it is, despite their efforts, still there. there are flowers overflowing the little garden and the windowboxes, too many to fit, and they bloom all year around.

    2. if you enter the house, you will be greeted by a warmth and the smell of freshly baked cookies. the house will remind you of home, even though your home looked nothing like this, and it will welcome you in so long as your intentions are good.

    3. the maybe-fae will smile at you, and you will smile back. they will offer to read your fortune, or to contact the spirits for you. accept whichever you would like, but do not forget that the fae demand something in return, and they are no different. leave your payments in silver or in secrets, whichever you may better afford.

    4. they will not ask for your name. they do not want that power.

    5. the cat will not harm you, so long as you do not approach him. if he offers you his stomach, do not rub it. it is a trick.

    6. when the maybe-fae allows you to leave, do so quickly and without fuss. thank them for their time and be on your way. be grateful for the blessing they have silently placed upon you.

    7. if you must return on some other date, call them a friend. they will return it in kind. still do not pet the cat.
